About Us

The State Bank of Prairie du Rocher was established in 1906 at the corner of Market and DuClos Streets.   In November of 1984, a fire destroyed two adjacent businesses. Bank management was able to buy the property and started building a new facility in 1985.  The building's architectural design adapts well to the community's French heritage.  The new Main Office was dedicated in May of 1986.

In  Memory

Dedicated in memory of Donald "Chub" Heizer, Executive Vice President,  1953-1992.  Few people were not touched by his 39 years of loyal devoted service to the bank and his exceptional leadership in the community of Prairie du Rocher, IL.

Prairie du Rocher - or "Prairie by the Rock" - was founded in 1722, making it the oldest continuous settlement in Illinois.  The town was centrally located in a major French farming area which produced enormous amounts of grain for shipment to New Orleans and then on to French-controlled islands in the Caribbean.

Modern residents of Prairie du Rocher celebrate New Year's Eve with the old French  Creole House, Prairie du Rocher, ILcustom of touring and singing La Guiannee and welcome autumn with the annual Apple Fete at the Creole House.  Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Creole House dates back to 1755 and typifies French architecture.

Near the village of Prairie du Rocher in the heart of the French Colonial District is Fort de Chartres.  The original fort, built of wood, was destroyed by flood and rebuilt of Fort de Chartres, Inside Viewlimestone in 1753.  The walls of the new fortress, which enclosed a 4-acre compound, were 15 feet high and three feet thick.  After the French and Indian War, the fort was surrendered to the British, who abandoned it in 1772.  Subsequently, much of the structure was dismantled by residents of Prairie du Rocher, who used the stone for building.  The original powder magazine remains, and portions of the walls and sentry boxes have been reconstructed.  The site houses a visitors' center and museum.

Each June and November you can experience the days of early New France at the bi-annual Fort de Chartres Rendezvous, complete with period music, dance and food.  Approximately 1,500 participants in authentic costumes portraying fur trappers, Indians, craftsmen, soldiers and musicians erect more than 300 authentic camps outside the fort's massive stone walls and recreate life of the 1750s.
